Who created LPT?
Doug Petkanics co-founded Livepeer in 2017 in collaboration with Eric Tang. Both Tang and Petkanics are entrepreneurs and software engineers who have worked together on multiple projects, such as Hyperpublic, an API and global open database that ties people, places, and things to their location. Groupon bought Hyperpublic, so they went on to build another company that relied on APIs from social media giants and search engines. After hitting roadblocks, they decided to branch out and create a decentralized open network solution based on blockchain technology.
In 2017, Petkanics and Tang were focused on Ethereum, which they viewed as a new paradigm. Ethereum enabled open-source decentralized software, and they saw its potential to use economic incentives to create a community that enjoys success and contributes to software building. Before starting Livepeer, they built two other Ethereum blockchain-based protocols called Auction House and DApp, both of which market and sell non-fungible assets and TAP. These protocols were created to boost security and transparency within Ethereum transactions.
Soon, they noticed that video streaming was increasing exponentially and recognized a huge potential in that market space. Video creators use streaming to communicate with viewers in their communities. Today, it is called the Creator Economy, but back in 2017, it did not have a name. They saw the potential to create an alternative to the “closed ecosystems” protected by Big Tech, such as the owners of YouTube and Twitch. So they made Livepeer to rebalance the equilibrium of video streaming and foster creative innovation that is not possible in closed ecosystems with centralized legacy cost structures.
