Who created MIOTA?
MIOTA was created by a team including Serguei Popov, Sergey Ivancheglo, David Sonstebo, and Dominik Schiener. The idea grew out of the Jinn project, which aimed to create low-cost and energy-efficient hardware for IoT networks. Jinn used a token sale to crowdfund its operations; however, the use of MIOTA tokens as profit-sharing tokens raised some regulatory questions. The team later pivoted from the IoT hardware business and ran another crowdfunding round marketing MIOTA as utility tokens for use in the IOTA network.
There are 27 quadrillion MIOTA tokens in existence. All of these tokens have been pre-mined and distributed. The IOTA network aims to be a decentralized system; however, the team currently uses a central server known as a Coordinator to ensure transactions are secured. The team plans to remove the Coordinator in a future update, making the system fully decentralized.
