What is Qtum?

QTUM is a cryptocurrency that was designed with the intent of combining the smart contract functionality of Ethereum with Bitcoin’s high-security unspent transaction output (UTXO) model. The goal was to build a model that could be used effectively within large organizations. After the platform’s founding in 2016 by Patrick Dai, Jordan Earls, and Neil Mahl, its initial coin offering took place in March 2017.

As of late 2021, QTUM had a market cap of $1.4 billion, giving it a rank of top 100 among currently listed cryptocurrencies.

What is Tether?

Tether, known by the tag of USDT, is a cryptocurrency token issued mainly on the Ethereum and Bitcoin blockchains and was originally backed entirely by the USD. It is a stablecoin, with the value pegged 1:1 to USD price. In 2019, Tether was involved in some controversy around just how much USD it was holding in reserve. To maintain their reputation, the founders announced that Tether would now be backed by other assets, including traditional currency and cash equivalents and occasionally other assets and receivables from loans made by Tether to third parties.

Tether was originally known as “Realcoin” and was developed by Brock Pierce, Craig Sellars and Reeve Collins. The original Realcoin was one of the first cryptocurrencies to be backed up by real-world assets, making it one of the first stablecoins.
