As blockchain finds new, interesting use cases across the world, Theta Network is positioned to take the technology to video streaming. As cryptocurrency in general is meant to serve as an antidote to financial centralization, THETA provides a peer-to-peer method for maintaining streaming services. In doing so, it aims to disrupt the status quo across the streaming space and give creators more power over their content and earnings.
THETA is unique among blockchains due to the way it focuses primarily around video streaming and related services. The Theta Network uses a decentralized, peer-to-peer system for users to share bandwidth and other resources. This facilitates streaming that offers more power, independence, and earning potential to creators. The role of THETA is to operate as a governance token so users can enact change by democratic vote based on a stake in the currency. It relies on enterprise-level nodes powered by major backers, such as Sony Europe, while smaller community networks run validator nodes.
Overall, the goal of the Theta Network is to revolutionize video streaming by cutting out middlemen and gatekeepers. Centralized design on platforms like Youtube and Twitch has proven harmful to creators, with the companies siding with corporations over dubious copyright claims while taking most of the revenue those same creators generate. Cutting down these barriers and putting power in the hands of the community may help creators of all sizes flourish, especially small creators who no longer have to pay a cut to a centralized streaming platform.
Who created THETA?
Mitch Liu and Jieyi Long founded THETA in 2018 with the goal of revolutionizing video entertainment. Together, they have years of experience in gaming, virtual reality, and distributed systems development. While Liu is the one with entertainment industry experience, Long is a technical expert with numerous blockchain-related patents to his name.
Besides the founders, THETA also has a team of corporate investors, including the Sony Innovation Fund, and numerous venture capitalists based out of Silicon Valley. Elite advisors to the team include Steve Chen and Justin Kan, the co-founders of Youtube and Twitch, respectively.
