With Wrapped Bitcoin, BTC becomes part of the Ethereum ecosystem. If you work with Bitcoin and Ethereum, adding WBTC to your wallet saves time and money while diversifying your portfolio.

Who created WBTC?

In 2018, industry leaders Kyber Network, Ren and BitGo collaborated on building a Bitcoin ERC-20 token. They reached out to industry peers for their insight and eventually launched WBTC in 2019. dApps like Compound immediately integrated WBTC into their platforms.

How do I exchange and Trade Wrapped Bitcoin?

To exchange and trade Wrapped Bitcoin, sign up for an account in exchanges like Rubix that supports WBTC. Buy WBTC with your debit or credit card, then keep it in your wallet, resell it later, trade it for another coin or use it on the Ethereum blockchain. Rubix processes most transactions directly through the platform.

If you have Bitcoin in your wallet, reach out to a merchant about converting your BTC to WBTC. The merchant gives the custodian authorization to mint WBTC, then transfers the BTC. After the custodian mints the WBTC, you receive the coins in your wallet.

Note that owning WBTC is not the same as owning BTC. Bitcoin has features and functionalities that you will not get with WBTC, which is built for the Ethereum network. Similarly, many traders won’t accept WBTC in place of BTC. Make sure you are using the right coin before you initiate a transaction.
